The customer is one of the largest healthcare providers in the United States.
The customer had become increasingly dissatisfied with a costly Teradata platform hindering their ability to meet reporting and business goals related to performance and scalability.
There was a reluctance to migrate from Teradata as the environment had received significant customization investment and due to the cost, complexity and scale from previous project estimates, including time to market from five to seven years.
The scale of the project meant that there were many moving parts to consider including: platform, databases, queries, operations, query performance, DB performance, and DR/recovery.
mLogica, in partnership with Oracle, presented their mLogica Database Migration Studio (STAR*M) as a solution to the extensive work time and high costs of a manual migration. STAR*M automates 100% of the translation process of the Teradata environments; thereby mitigating the risk of human coding errors and significantly reducing time to market.
Proof-of-concepts were performed on a range of test queries to demonstrate the competency of STAR*M’ automated translation and the product’s ability to identify, categorize, and prioritize by complexity of query; ultimately allowing the customer’s database to be processed on a timely basis despite being over 100,000 SQL files.
With mLogica’s team and STAR*M the migration was projected to a two year timeline; three to five years shorter than quoted by manual migration competitors. Multiple regions are currently in live deployment just over a year after the start of the project. The significantly reduced time-to-market supported by mLogica was an essential factor in the customer’s decision to migrate to Oracle Exadata’s platform.
Moving from Teradata to Oracle Exadata supports a significant TCO decrease, estimated at $1BN cost-savings over five years.
Moving to Oracle allows the customer to standardize their technology platforms and embark on an update to a technology with a clear roadmap, allowing easy management of the platform going forward. This migration to Oracle Exadata allows the customer to be more nimble and agile in response to their business needs.
